5 Tips for Breast Cancer

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Every year in the U.S. more than 200,000 women get breast cancer and over 40,000 die.  This means it is likely to affect you or someone you know.  Here are 5 tips on this disease.

  1. Breast cancer occurs mostly in women over age 50.  You can't change sex or age but you can get proper screening to detect problems early (check out this chart for screening guidelines)
  2. Exercise regularly (at least 4 hours a week).  Even a daily walking program can help
  3. Get a good night's sleep
  4. Avoid drinking alcohol
  5. Physical Therapy can help guide breast cancer survivors in proper exercise to regain strength and flexibility and prevent lymphedema after surgery and radiation.
